“In this series of paintings, I confront the paradox of progress within the feminist movement—a movement that, despite its monumental strides, still finds itself in an endless chase to heal the deep-seated wounds inflicted by a patriarchal world. My work explores the persistence of these wounds and the insidious ways they continue to shape the lives of women.
Central to my paintings is the use of a third-dimensional aspect: I physically cut into the canvas, creating a dark, gaping hole. This void is filled with the deepest black pigment available on the market, symbolizing the insatiable wound left by centuries of systemic oppression. It is a void that cannot be easily filled or forgotten, representing the enduring damage that is brought upon by a patriarchal society.
The women depicted in my paintings contort to this void, embodying the struggle to navigate a world where patriarchal norms are deeply ingrained. Despite the progress made, these figures reflect the reality that women must still adhere to these oppressive rules or risk being cast out—socially, financially, and even wholly. The bending forms signify both resilience and the burden of conformity, highlighting the continuous sacrifice demanded by a system resistant to change.
Through this work, I aim to evoke a visceral response, urging viewers to confront or at least acknowledge the ongoing challenges faced by women. The dark void serves as a stark reminder that the fight for true equality is far from over. It is a call to acknowledge the pain that persists and to inspire a collective effort towards a future where these wounds can finally begin to heal.”
