Art Fair Philippines 2022: States of Cadence

Grounded Philippines is proud to present to you States of Cadence II in partnership with Art Fair Philippines — a multi-sensory exhibit on timelessness and infinite evolution of the human spirit, through connection, compassion, and engagement with the natural world.

Enamored by the female form, Lucia “FISCH” Fischer explores themes of feminism and female identity. Focusing on destabilizing ideas concerning the ‘Male Gaze’ and gender rhetorics that have dominated cultural perceptions and traditions throughout the human timeline. The execution of her work primarily uses mixed media in order to have all avenues available when trying to capture the currently vilianized complexities of what it means to be a woman in the 21st century. A consisten presence of soft pastel and paper can be found in many of her works as it is her main medium to accentuate vulnerability and the mercy that most women have to endure. Her artistic expression aims to empower and reclaim the female form beyond sexual objectification and other surface level understandings common to general descriminations. Growing up as a half-filipino/half-german nomad, FISCH works between two studios. One located in Quezon City, Philippines, and just recently another located in Basel, Switzerland.

“Why is the strong independent woman more often than not seen as isolated from society? as if friendship among equals is such a rarity it comes off as a suggested impossibility. That independence has to be taken to the extreme sense of itself. Maybe this strong independent woman sees it as the necessary sacrifice. She has mastered the ladder, at “a fair cost”. But who built the ladder in the first place?

This structure, this ascension is out-dated. Wasn’t it built by men for a man’s world, during a completely different time? If she were to create her own way, a new path, a new system, would it even be a ladder? Where would she go? What call would she answer to? What would she seek out? Which virtues would she uphold? What does the truly empowered feminine, (not by man’s definition of empowerment), look like?”
